The Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve, "where the sky is born" in Maya, was established in 1986 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sian Kaan faces the biggest conservation challenge: finding a way to integrate human activities without compromising other life forms contained within its boundaries. The reserve has a size of approximately 1.3 million hectares
and it stretches 120 kilometers from north to south, comprising almost a third of the Caribbean coast of Mexico. Sian Kaan is home to 103 known mammal species, 336 known bird species, and an important nesting site for two endangered species of sea turtles. It contains three large central zones where human activity is limited with permission for scientific research. Low-impact human activities and sustainable development occur in the area of the reserve known as the buffer zone. The human population is estimated at 2,000, most of which are found in the coastal regions, especially in the fishing villages of Punta Allen and Punta Herrero. About one percent of the land within the reserve is privately owned. It is believed that the reserve was inhabited in the Preclassic and Classic periods as part of the chiefdoms of Cohuah and Uaymil. There are twenty-three known archaeological sites within the reserve. Discoveries of human remains, pottery, and other artifacts date back 2,300 years. The northernmost section of Sian Kaan contains what is believed to be an ancient trade route through lagoons and mangrove channels between the cities of Tulum and Muyil.
